Is Facebook’s LIKE button slowing down the Internet?

Facebook’s LIKE button is enormously popular across the Internet. Per Bret Taylor, over 2 million websites use Facebook’s social plugins. Content websites use it to allow their readers to ‘like’ their pages and share their preferences with friends.

However, is Facebook’s LIKE button slowing down the Internet?

Content heavy sites that used to load in a few seconds before Facebook buttons now take 10’s of seconds to load. While waiting to load, in most cases, these are the messages being displayed in the browser.

This slowness is across sites, across browsers and at all times of the day.

Check your favorite websites with a stopwatch to measure the load times. Numion  stopwatch is a handy tool to do the same.

Is Facebook sharing coming at a cost of slowing down the Internet?
