Your SmartPhone, a 8 Megapixel Camera with No Optical Zoom

Do you know of a 5 or 8 Megapixel camera with no optical zoom?

Do you know of a 720P or 1080p camcorder with no optical zoom?

You are probably holding one in your hand right now - your iPhone or Android phone.

Optical zoom is an absolute must to get good quality photos or video. Without it you will always get the distant shot. And a wide-angle lens with optical zoom is even better as it allows you to capture more of the scene.

The megapixel of the camera does not matter; it will only give a bigger distant shot. And neither does digital zoom, which just postprocesses the captured distant photo.

To date, the most advanced smartphones lack optical zoom. Check the specs below

HTC EVO 4G - 8 MP, 1080p video recording, no optical zoom

iPhone 4 – 4 MP, 720P video recording, no optical zoom

And, the rumored Google Nexus-S’s Camera – no optical zoom

And compare this to an entry-level digital camera
Nikon Coolpix S80 – 14.1 MP, 720p video recording, 5x wide-angle optical zoom

Until the smartphone manufacturers figure out a way to start adding optical zoom in the smartphones, we’ll have to stay content with the distant shots.
