Want Healthy Kidneys? Keep A Vegetarian Diet

Want healthy kidneys? Then keep a Vegetarian diet. Eating a vegetarian diet has many health benefits, and now add “keeps your kidneys healthy” to the list.

Phosphorus is a common element present in most foods. For patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), it is recommended that dietary phosphorus intake be limited as their kidneys are unable to remove this mineral leading to toxic effects in the body.

Researchers at Indiana University compared CKD patients on a vegetarian diet versus those eating meat and found that the vegetarians had significantly lower phosphorus levels in their bodies compared to the meat eaters. Lower phosphorus levels means healthier kidneys.

They concluded that CKD patients would benefit from keeping a vegetarian diet.
