DNA Sequencing Costs From 2001 to 2011

See the dramatic drop in DNA Sequencing Costs from 2001 to 2011 (Source: NHGRI)

Costs Per Genome dropped from $95 million to $29,000

And DNA Sequencing Costs per Megabase dropped from $5,300 to $0.32

With the fast paced improvement in sequencing techniques, the NHGRI data may be already be old. Services such as DNANexus already offer a sequencing price of $20/Gigabase and NIH projects that with 3rd generation sequencers, a full genome sequencing in 24-hours will be possible at a cost of ~$1,000. Even further dramatic improvements are coming several years from now, with personal genome sequencing in five minutes.
