Antivirus, antispyware, antimalware protection and cleanup of all flavors are available – Symantec, Norton, McAfee, Eset, Stopzilla, Vipre etc – and even services who remotely access your PC to clean it up such as MyCleanPC, MyFasterPC, iYogi KillSlow etc. The software or services will perform a scan of your PC for free but then encourage you to buy their product and you may get signed up to their yearly subscription plan.

Here are simple steps that you can follow which will keep your PC fast and clean for free.

Step 1
Switch to Chrome browser, from any browser you are using today. Chrome is the fastest and most secure browser for PC’s today.

A distant second is Safari, which is also secure but much slower than Chrome and sometimes can be the cause of a slow PC. Firefox is not recommended as it has some of the same issues as Safari.

Do not use Internet Explorer, the source for most PC malware infections.

Adobe Flash is also often a source for malware infections. Although Chrome will keep you updated with the latest version of Flash, to be extra safe, disable Adobe Flash in Chrome when visiting suspect websites and clean the Flash cookies periodically.

Step 2
Before visiting unknown websites, type their URL in Google and make sure that no warnings are posted for that website. Google is prompt in detecting and alerting if a website is infected with malware.

Step 3
Run a full scan of the PC with Malwarebytes free edition, one of the best antimalware tools. Remove any viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, rootkits or any other malware reported.
Additionally, run a full scan with SuperAntispyware free edition, another great antimalware tool. Remove any malware reported.

Periodically, e.g. once a week, keep updating their malware definition files and running a full scan.

Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware will make sure your PC is clean. Step 1 and 2 will make sure your PC stays clean. A clean PC also makes for a fast PC.

Some antivirus programs, such as Symantec rtvscan or McAfee, itself can be the cause of a slow PC, as they will constantly run to protect your PC and saturate your cpu. If you have these, disable them.

For an additional boost in performance, add a SSD drive to your PC.
