How to Pick Colors for Your Website

A few great ideas on how to pick colors for your website from crazyegg.

If you prefer your own color palette -

Use 3 colors with the 60-30-10 rule.
  • The primary color should cover about 60% of the space and create the overall unifying theme of the design.
  • The 30% should contrast with the 60% to create a visually striking effect.
  • The 10% is an ‘accent color’, which should complement either your primary or secondary color
Use tints and shades if more than three colors are needed.

Use color palette tools such as ColorSchemeDesigner, Adobe Kuler and Colorotate to design your own palette.

Or, pick colors from a photo that you like – ideally, a photo that is related to the theme of your website.

Or, pick colors tied to your business goals and that elicit the proper response from your visitors e.g. GroupOn’s website.
