How to Remove Akamai NetSession Malware

How to remove Akamai’s NetSession malware from your computer.

If you suddenly find your computer running very slow with the cpu close to 100%, Akamai’s NetSession malware may be a cause.

Akamai NetSession may have got installed on your computer as part of some download.

Once on your computer, NetSession will run all the time saturating your cpu. Even if you kill netsession_win.exe, its process, it will restart and again occupy the cpu. If you quit the browser, netsession will still keep running and also keep a copy of the browser running.

All classic signs of a malware.

The following screenshot on a PC show netsession_win.exe and chrome.exe running even after quitting the browser.

The Solution
Remove netsession permanently. e.g. on PC’s, remove Akamai NetSession Interface via the control panel.

Akamai NetSession is another example of poorly designed software that will hog your cpu 100%. Other similar poorly designed software include Symantec rtvscan, McAfee antivirus and Google Update.

And, NetSession Interface according to Akamai
If the software or media publisher uses the feature and if you enable it, NetSession can also use a small amount of your upload bandwidth to enable other users of the NetSession Interface to download pieces of the publisher's content from your computer. The NetSession Interface runs in the background and uses a negligible amount of your computer resources or upload bandwidth when you are not actively downloading content.
Obviously Akamai doesn’t use its own software so can’t see the problems with it. The user gets no choice in enabling the software. Once installed, NetSession takes up 100% of the cpu and the full Internet bandwidth of the computer … the software runs without the permission of the user.
Akamai NetSession Interface downloads or streams content to you only after you have requested it from your software or media publishers.
No. NetSession downloads on its own without getting the users permission.
